This novel-in-stories follows the story of a young woman who escapes slavery in 1850s Louisiana, and is turned into a vampire while working in a brothel.ĭescribed as “the world’s first black lesbian-feminist vampire novel,” the novel drops into Gilda’s “life” throughout the decades around the U.S., exploring issues of race, sexuality, and identity along the way.
